I love Angela Carter's Wayward Women and Wicked Ways. Birthday Stories by Murakami (asides from the annoyance of including one of his own in there) is a great one too, and themed in an unusual way. Helped me rediscover one of the great Denis Johnson short stories, Dundun.
I also find it frustrating when the present is treated as exceptional! I don’t like that we’ve ceded everyone the past to a group of people with some very specific views— who I expect many of the people in the past would despise
I love anthologies. I keep a big fat notebook devoted to noting down the short stories and poems I love. When I can't sleep, I go through them all and think about which I'd anthologize together, under what theme, etc. I am so glad of the BL's weird tales series for bringing Dorothy K. Haynes back into print.
That’s a great list Camilla - I picked up that AS Byatt recently second hand. The Carrington story is exceptional. The same shop had this “short stories for elderly people” collection which I should have got. I saw those Weird collections in my local shop.
This is a terrific article, thank you Camilla for sharing ideas. I am currently working my way through "Short" edited by Alan Ziegler. It's a wonderful collection.
Adding these to my list! I also love anthologies even though most of my experience is with textbook anthologies, which are didactic and, these days, simplistic. But my granddaughter is reading Wuthering Heights right now, so there's hope for a return to literacy.

You have made me want to read again after a period of struggle. Currently ripping through shelves of books for my copy of rattlebag.
Thank you.
